Fines and Penalties

The vignette requirement is monitored through automatic number plate recognition systems and manual checks. The following penalties apply for violations:

Appeals and Complaints

If you have received a penalty notice and believe it is unjustified, you have the right to appeal.

Step 1: Review the penalty notice

Carefully check the penalty notice for accuracy (registration plate, date, location, violation).

Step 2: Lodge an appeal

Lodge a written appeal within 4 weeks. Address the appeal to the authority named in the notice.

Step 3: Attach evidence

Attach all relevant evidence (e.g. vignette purchase receipt, photos, witness statements).

Step 4: Await response

The authority will review your appeal and notify you of the outcome in writing.

Exceptions to the Vignette Requirement

Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight
Emergency vehicles (police, fire brigade, ambulance)
Military vehicles on duty
Diplomatic vehicles with appropriate credentials
Vehicles with special exemption permits
Vehicles on vignette-free roads (federal roads)
Vehicles using only routes with section tolls
Certain historic vehicles (depending on registration)

Limitations and Restrictions

Not transferable to other vehicles
Non-refundable after purchase
Sticker vignette loses validity when removed
Does not apply to routes with section tolls
Does not apply to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes
Digital vignette only valid for the registered plate
Cannot be transferred to a different registration plate
Annual vignette expires on 31 January of the following year
